1:00 pm, Sat 5th December 2009

Recently featured in the South Wales Echo, artist Jennie Savage will be instore signing copies of her beautiful art book" Depending on Time"
Depending On Time is situated in a changing landscape during the period of time it takes to construct a new shopping centre. The book takes this period of change as its subject and draws out the narratives, the expectations, the aspirations and the criticism that local people have in the run up to its completion. Through transcribed conversations with small businesses, shoppers, local historians, architects, town planners and developers the book maps the anatomy of the development and traces a the trajectory of consumer culture from the city’s Victorian and Edwardian arcades through to the monolithic mall. Crucially asking the question:
Who are cities for?
Depending On Time is an end point for an 18-month residency undertaken by Jennie Savage in Cardiff. It is both a document and a history, recording the arcades as they are now and publishing original research that celebrates their architecture and history.
Over the course of the project Jennie Savage produced a number of site-specific pieces, events and installations which invited people to discuss and engage in dialogue about the nature of the 21st century city. “The Museum of the Moment”, an audio documentary and “A Million Moments”, a 20 Minute film are included in the book on a CD ROM. Forward by Peter Finch, essays by Dr. Andrew Cochrane and Dr. Bas Spierings.
Jennie Savage is an artist whose practice explores the place between public spaces, town planning, constructed landscapes and the human story: the lived lives and personal narratives connected to those sites. Working through a process that uses archiving and intervention, she seeks to map the other life of a place or community in order to reveal a complex situation, a microstructure or simply an unheard voice. www.jenniesavage.co.uk

1:00 pm, Sat 12th December 2009

Thousands of people each year set out to learn Welsh – through evening classes, week-long courses, WLPAN and other sessions. But a large proportion drop out – and for many, the biggest challenge is going out from the classroom into the community and speaking Welsh in shops, schools, homes, churches, pubs.

Linda Newcombe tackles this problem in a way no-one has done before. She examines situations where learners have found it difficult to use their Welsh.
The book speaks to three groups of people:
•If you are a learner yourself, there are tips to help you to be braver with your attempts to use your new language.
•If you teach Welsh, Lynda has tips for you, too, on how to equip your students to use Welsh outside the classroom.
•If you are a first-language Welsh-speaker, maybe you feel you don’t know how best to help learners – this book will help you!
