"Wales at War:The Experience of the Second World War in Wales"

When World War II began in September 1939 Wales was considered to be one of the safest parts of the United Kingdom. However, with the Fall of France in June 1940 it came within the range of German bombers based there. Death and destruction followed. The conflict changed every aspect of life in Wales.
Many Welsh people remembered World War I, and the depression that followed it, and there was a sense that, after the defeat of Hitler, post-War Wales should benefit from a fairer and more equitable society.
In Wales at War, Stuart Broomfield examines how World War II affected Wales and its people, including its role as a strategic refuge, attitudes to the conflict, air raids and the role of the coalfields, as well as its impact on post-War developments. He also seeks to explain why the Labour Party did so well there in the General Election of 1945, despite Winston Churchill's status as victorious war-leader.

A true rail enthusiast, William Bleasdale has produced an enthusiastic travelogue of his three journeys through Ireland and Scotland by rail.
Profusely illustrated, the book is designed to appeal to rail buffs, historians, holiday-makers and armchair travellers alike.

From steam trains to intercity services, from busy main lines to tiny sections of track restored and maintained by enthusiasts, the wide range of railways to be enjoyed in each of these two countries is explored. William Bleasdale also takes the reader on his many detours by road and ferry to see various places of interest. He gives detailed descriptions of the varied and beautiful scenery he encounters, from the bleak splendour of north-east Scotland, to the shores of western Ireland. His fascination with the history of the places he visits comes across in the wealth of detail in these pages. But above all, his knowledgeable account of railways past and present underpins the travelogue – the voice of an ex-railway man whose passion for the locomotives is as strong as ever.

Come and meet William and get a signed copy of this lovely book

But before reaching his current status in the world of professional rugby, he went through an excruciating personal crisis. For years he was unable come to terms with what he was - the real Nigel Owens was on the inside, trying to come out. Indeed, he was the first gay man in professional rugby to "come out".
Since doing so, his life has changed for the better and his careers in both rugby and broadcasting have blossomed.

1:00 pm, Sat 12th December 2009

Thousands of people each year set out to learn Welsh – through evening classes, week-long courses, WLPAN and other sessions. But a large proportion drop out – and for many, the biggest challenge is going out from the classroom into the community and speaking Welsh in shops, schools, homes, churches, pubs.

Linda Newcombe tackles this problem in a way no-one has done before. She examines situations where learners have found it difficult to use their Welsh.
The book speaks to three groups of people:
•If you are a learner yourself, there are tips to help you to be braver with your attempts to use your new language.
•If you teach Welsh, Lynda has tips for you, too, on how to equip your students to use Welsh outside the classroom.
•If you are a first-language Welsh-speaker, maybe you feel you don’t know how best to help learners – this book will help you!
